Gyaku Waza (aka Reverse Techniques or Methods of Escape)
Pictured below are Sensei Anthony and Sensei Ron at various stages in the KU drill called "Gyaku Waza". In the
photo (left) Sensei Anthony has just escaped a "wrist / finger grab" and is countering with a punch to the jaw. As an aside,
look at how Anthony's hands are positioned ... the same as the last moves in Kata Jihon and Naifunchi Shodan. In the
second photo, Sensei Anthony is in the beginning stages of escaping from a classical headlock.

Also at the Tournament, Sensei Ron and Sensei Heather performed a routine that demonstrated how the
basic stances used within Karate are used in a self defence situation (from the KU "Kamae Waza"
drill). Pictured below in the photo on the left is Sensei Ron preparing to take Sensei Heather down. In
the photo on the right, Sensei Heather returns the favour using a different takedown and shows no mercy :-)
Congratulations to Sensei Anthony Woodward - 20th Anniversary!!!
Sensei Anthony began his training at the Durham College Club (Sensei Jose-Carlos Garcia) in September of 1990.
Sensei Anthony has been with the Brooklin-Whitby club since March of 2000. During class on September 30, 2010,
Anthony was surprised with the presentation of a cake and certificate recognizing him for accomplishing this
major milestone of 20 years in Karate. Sensei Ron thanked Anthony for his dedication to his own personal
training / development and also for his many contributions to the success of the Brooklin-Whitby Club and to all
of the help and guidance he has provided to all students over the years. Sensei Anthony is pictured below
(directly behind the cake) surrounded by his “karate family”.
Monthly Senior Belt Class
Once a month, usually on the last Thursday of the month, Senior students from the Brooklin club
and clubs from the surrounding area (Port Perry, Courtice, Ajax / Pickering, etc.) get together
to review current curriculum at a deeper level and to learn new drills, concepts, and techniques.
Pictured below is the group that got together for the September 2010 class. The purpose of the
class was to review all Pinan Kata for correctness of technique, consistency of performance (thus
ensuring consistency of teaching), and to study the "hidden" applications contained within the kata.
Heber Down 2010
On our annual trek to Heber Down this year we worked on a Bo Kata called Sushi No Kon Sho. Training at Heber Down
affords us the opportunity to train out of doors in a wide open natural setting on uneven ground in the prevailing
weather conditions at that moment (always HOT and HUMID, bordering on rain). The turnout was GREAT with visiting
members from other clubs (Port Perry and Courtice), a long time friend from the "Durham College" days (Gord
Geissberger), and members from the Brooklin-Whitby dojo along with their friends and family.
A SURPRISE Visit!!!
An Assistant Instructor was starting the children's class. Sensei Ron was at the
back of the class facing the same way as the students, towards the front, towards
the Assistant. Ron heard some rustling behind him and as a couple of students were
missing from class he turned around to see which of them had arrived. Much to Ron's
surprise, Sensei Neil Taylor (who currently lives Northwest of Detroit) was standing
in the hallway! When Ron started taking karate in January of 1982, Neil was a senior
student in the class! It was a total surprise and a total pleasure to have Neil
visit the Brooklin-Whitby club. It was more than a pleasure having Neil teach the
complete "Family" class (which follows the "Children's" class). Shown below is a
photo of Neil instructing the class, a group photo, and lastly a photo of older
versions of the "Ron and Neil" that used to train together in days gone by :-)
Bassai Dai
At Brooklin Karate's Senior Belt Class held in September, the second of three planned
sessions aimed at studying the self-defense applications contained within kata Bassai
Dai was completed.
Pictured below, Sensei Ron has been seized by Sensei Anthony. Ron escapes by throwing
Anthony using the same motion as the outside middle block used near the beginning
of Bassai Dai.
Kata - Solo and Two-Person, Armed and Unarmed, Analysis and Application
Pictured below (left) is Sensei Heather and Sensei Anthony working on an application
