Some recent visitors to our home-based dojo:
In the photo on the left is Sensei Frank Murphy from the Port Perry Club. Frank visited in August.
In the photo on the right is Sensei Larry O'Grady from the Etobicoke Club. Larry visited in December.

At the end of July (2011) Sensei Ron and his wife Beth visited us for a couple of days at our home just outside
of Pembroke. During that time, Sensei Ron taught our Tuesday night class. He focused on basics emphasizing proper
technique and the development of power. We also spent time working on kihon kumite drills that dealt with defenses
and counters against front kicks and roundhouse kicks.

A Pre-“Snow Season” Visit from Sensei Ron Sheyan
Sensei Ron and his wife Beth paid us a visit on November 23-24. After visiting for a few hours, it was time to head to
the dojo where Sensei Ron led the class. It was a surprise and a delight to have Beth join in on the class as a student.
He taught a portion of a drill that dealt with protecting the anatomical targets that are most frequently attacked and used
the most common ways to attack them. A counter was included as part of each defense. A flow drill was built by linking
all of the individual attacks and defenses together so that there were continuous attacks and defenses. All of the students
had fun with the new drill and performed it very well.

Thank you Sensei Ron for again sharing your knowledge with us and our students and also for taking the time to travel to
Pembroke. We hope to see you again in a few months when the Spring-like weather arrives!

Pictured below is a group photo of the class during Sensei Ron’s visit. Also shown is Chipper defending against and
countering an overhead strike from Sensei Jim.

A Guest Visit In January
We had a visit from Sensei Ron Sheyan and his wife Beth on January 12-13. It's rare to see him
up this way during the "snowy" season and greatly appreciated. Sensei Ron led the class of mainly
white belts through all of their basics and commented on their enthusiasm. Thank you again Sensei
for taking the time to travel our way and give instruction to our students. Pictured below is a
class photo from that evening and a shot of Sensei Margaret's fist!

Sensei Ron Pays Us A Visit
Sensei Ron, 6th dan and Chief Instructor of Brooklin-Whitby Karate visited our dojo and taught a class on June the 2nd.
Sensei concentrated on a blocking drill that covered all of the blocks that we are familiar with plus a hooking block (kake uke).
We learned the drill individually then spent the rest of the class working with a partner integrating the solo drill into a two
person flow drill. At the end of the class, Sensei Ron tested out the three highest belts (Graham, Gavin and Ben) by partnering
with each one of them and turning up the intensity of the drill to see what they had learned. Sensei Ron said they all did well!
After the regular class, Sensei Ron spent time grading our most senior student (Graham Mask) for his Shodan rank.
Pictured below is Sensei Ron (far left) with the group who attended class that evening.

Sensei Ron Sheyan Returns - September 2008.
Sensei Ron, 6th dan and Head Instructor of Brooklin Karate, returned on September the 16th for another visit. During the first hour
of class Sensei Ron concentrated on basics, specifically the generation of power, the importance of proper stances, and the timing of
techniques with regards to body movement. During the last part of the class two sequences of techniques from Pinan Nidan were analyzed
for their applicability in a self defense situation. After the analysis the applications were practiced. Pictured below is a group
photo and also a photo of the students working on speed and power generation during the "basics" part of the class.
